If you are fortunate enough to have a short vacation in New York City, you will find this just enough time to see the most popular visitor attractions. One of the busiest visitor locations in the city is the Empire State Building and even if you don't get to the top there is still a great deal to see. For others the winner of this little competition is the Rockefeller Center which is a little taller but if you don't have a clear day you won't see anything anyway. Of course the Statue of Liberty is another favorite if you can handle the crowds which have grown even bigger since nine eleven but you can always stop at Ellis Island which was once the home to the immigration center.
As an alternative why not go to Staten Island via the free ferry and look at the Statue of Liberty from there, there are always a good number of professional standard street performers to watch. However, no a short vacation trip to New York would be complete now without a visit to where the World Trade Center Towers once stood not that long ago. It's strangely moving location and the terrorist struck World Trade Centre site covers a huge area but it is a peculiarly unfriendly subject for the photographer. If you want to see the famous stores, you can visit Tiffany's and the 5th Ave style leaders or bargain hunt around Broadway and plunder the discount warehouses of the Lower East Side.
Then there is Maceys, where there is always a sale so don't forget to get your 11 per cent tourist discount card, remember you can look, but don't touch at Bloomingdales. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum will also be worth visiting late next year when it re-opens after a period of refurbishment, once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. The highlight of this museum is the USS Intrepid, a World War Two aircraft carrier which houses the likes of the supersonic plane - Concorde not to mention a number of submarines. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you're down that way; it's free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep, all sorts of items are on display here and it's a great place for souvenirs.
The Lower East Side also has a very large time capsule called The Lower East Side Tenement Museum which captures the lives of immigrants to New York back in 1864 Then it is worth seeing some of the older history of New York back when there were huge numbers of migrants entering the city and the Lower East Tenement was where most of them ended up which is now a museum and a time capsule. If you visit Central Park (and why wouldn't you?) you can call into the Museum of New York City which has some excellent exhibitions about the past, present and future of the city. The building's pretty grand and the shop sells quality souvenirs and while admission to this venue is free, a nine dollar donation is recommended. For such a large vibrant city, a short vacation in New York should be viewed as minimum if most of the major attractions are to be seen comfortably and not as part of a 'whistle stop' tour.
